CELL DIVISION

Cell division is a process by which new cells are formed from pre-existing ones. Cells divide by two processes- mitosis and meiosis. Let us look at the difference between them.

NOTE: Chromosomes occupy a central stage in cell division.

MITOSIS MEIOSIS
One cell division involves four phases Broadly two phases are involved, meiosis I and meiosis II. Prophase I has five substages

Occurs in all somatic cells

Occurs in reproductive cells only
Chromosome number remains the same (2n) Chromosome number reduces (n)
Two daughter cells are produced Four daughter cells are produced
Genetic material remains constant Genetic variability occurs
Crossing over does not take place Crossing over takes place
